Learn more about CQA®!

What is the Canadian Quality Assurance® program?
The Canadian Quality Assurance® (CQA®) program is setting a new standard for quality pork production. CQA® assures our customers that the pork we produce in Canada is the best. The program is based on the internationally recognized HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) program, a scientifically based method to ensure food safety. The system consists of a method of identifying potential hazards within an operation or program, and then determining the critical points at which controls are necessary to ensure safety and compliance.

  • To processors, it's a guarantee that animals have been produced under stringent standards.
  • To consumers, it means the products they choose are safe and wholesome.
  • As a hog producer, the CQA® program provides a competitive edge in developing and maintaining markets at home, across the continent, and around the world.

What does CQA® mean on the farm?
For most producers, it simply means following good production practices and keeping detailed records throughout the hog production process. This is something most producers already do to maintain quality and consistency. Under the CQA® program, producers are asked to keep specific records and open those records to program validators.

With accurate records, it's easier to control the quality of the final product. Canada produces some of the finest pork in the world and CQA® will let our global clients, as well as those here at home, see exactly how quality is guaranteed. CQA® will ultimately save producers time and money because they will have the information they need to monitor their own performance, regularly improve their product and stay ahead of their competitors. In an increasingly competitive market, processors won't accept hogs from producers who are not prepared to make a clear commitment to quality.

Why do we need the CQA® program?
In 2004, over 90% of pork produced in Manitoba was exported. Our success abroad is built on our reputation as producers of high quality pork and pork products. The CQA® program will let us continue to demonstrate that we are leaders in quality pork production. Canada Pork Council is partnering this program with Manitoba Pork Council. Although it is a national program, the administration and delivery are done at provincial level.
